Located at the center of vibrantly bustling and prosperous Van Don port since the 11th century, Quan Lan Island is a place where many boats from all over the world dock. According to maritime history, then Quan Lan island is considered as an important port of East Coast. Since early 19th century, French colonialists have built a lighthouse in order to help locate and coordinates for merchant ships.
This is considered the most ancient lighthouse of Vietnam and Southeast as well as historic site of Quan Lan island. The lighthouse is constructed with granite stones. Height and shape are calculated very carefully that just fitted the stones together to create a solid block. The lighthouse has 184 stairs leading to the top of the spiral stairs leading dozens peaked lights. All building materials are brought from France including a lamp with a capacity of 2,000 w on the top and a generator.
